What is the History of Crowells Corner, VA?

Crowells Corner is named after Daniel Crowell, who settled there in 1809. He had purchased the land from a local woman named Ann Phillips.  The town was originally called “Crowells Corner” after the first settler. However, the post office chose to call the town “Crowells Corner, VA” after the fact that the original town name was “Crowells Corner.”   Crowells Corner was originally a stop along the Richmond and Danville Railroad. That railroad was built in the late 1800s and ran from Richmond to Danville, VA.   A railroad depot was built in Crowells Corner in 1910, and it served as a train station until 1932. However, the town’s location made it easy to be bypassed by trains during World War II.  As a result, Crowells Corner became a popular stop for families making treks along the Appalachian Trail. The town still has a number of trailside hostels and camps.

Crowells Corner is located in Amherst County, VA, along the banks of the Rapidan River. It’s roughly 70 miles from Richmond and 60 miles from Lynchburg.  The Amherst County Courthouse is located in the middle of Main Street.
